Minnesota state law says teachers can’t withhold access to recess from students. My kids’ school has one “recess” and then a second “afternoon break at teachers’ discretion” (which everyone calls “second recess”). One of my kids’ teacher in particular loves to “cancel second recess” as a punishment for class misbehavior, and there doesn’t seem to be any recourse, due to the semantics of it not being “recess” but rather “afternoon break at teachers’ discretion.” Annoying. (And, of course, everyone knows the best way to get a classroom full of squirrely elementary schoolers to behave better is to deprive them of one of their few opportunities to run around outside in the fresh air!)
